Hunts Pond Road Traffic Calming Report
If you live in the the area, you are no doubt familar with the pinch points in Hunts Pond Road that were intended to improve road safety. However, there are a number of serious issues with these which are covered in a comprehemsive report which can be downloaded here. (A 3Mb PDF file).
It is a lengthy report which presents a reference based case to explain why, as many residents perceive, the road has become more dangerous than it was before. Very briefly, there are some design features of the calming system which encourage speeding between pinch points, make it difficult to judge a safe driving line and to determine a safe passage width. Furthermore, these features introduce much greater risk of pedestrians being involved in accidents and they cause fixed point speed measurements, taken by HCC to prove that the calming is working, to be invalid. Extraordinarily, all of these design features go against Department for Transport best practice advice. The report examines this advice and asks why it was ignored in the case of Hunts Pond Rd. The other aspect of the report is that the accident history clearly shows that for five years before the fatal accident in 2012, Hunts Pond Road North was less dangerous than Hunts Pond Road South – Dimmocks Corner to Warsash Road –despite traffic calming having been installed along Hunts Pond Road South since around 2007.
(Note - Dimmocks Corner has a number of spelling variations, but this is the current one used by HCC and bus companies).
As of January, this is still ongoing.
